The current IBF Super middleweight Champion Lucian Bute is currently without an opponent to fight. Bute, 31, had originally been scheduled to fight former WBC and WBO Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik on November 5th but Pavlik pulled out of both a fight with Bute and a more immediate fight with Daryl Cunningham, feeling that the $1.35 million offered to face Bute was not enough. Pavlik has since been under intense media scrutiny and it has left Bute looking for someone to fight.

Well, I say looking, but apparently his promoters, Interbox, haven't put in much effort. A few names have been mentioned for Bute to face, with forty two year old veteran Glen Johnson being the most likely. Johnson, a former IBF and The Ring Light Heavyweight Champion, is certainly a capable fighter but has lost three of his last five fights, most recently to British Super Middleweight Carl Froch.

Glen Johnson has come out and said that the offer made to him to fight Bute was nowhere near good enough. He told 8CountNews:

Yea man, they offered Kelly Pavlik a ton more and they are low balling me. Maybe they have some concern about me. Maybe they are just trying to run me out of the fight by low balling me.

So now that makes two men who are unhappy with the offers made to them by Bute's people. What does Bute think of this? Is he holding out to fight someone else? There are a few plausible answers.

Bute Wants A Super Middleweight Unification Match:

On October 29th Andre Ward and Carl Froch meet at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City to fight for the WBC and WBA Super Middleweight titles. Given that Bute currently holds the IBF title, and that he has ranked in most places as the #1 Super Middleweight in the world, it must be an appealing prospect to face either the hard-hitting Englishman Froch or the twenty seven year old undefeated Andre Ward.

So three possibilities remain. Either he wants to fight the winner of Froch/Ward, he wants to get out of a fight altogether on November 5th, or more realistically he wants to face a lower level of opposition; someone who will keep him in fighting shape but not push him too much in the face or a bigger fight with a better opponent. Whatever the answer, Bute better decide soon and if he has any sense he will give his fans a fight to get excited about.

Update On Bute's Next Fight!
It has been announced today that Lucian Bute will indeed face Glen Johnson on November 5th. He must have come up with a better offer, or perhaps Johnson was just angling for a bigger purse. Whatever the reason, I'm sure after this Bute will go for a bigger name fighter.
