James DeGale makes his first defence of his EBU title against Cristian Sanavia in Denmark

After being rather inactive in 2011, James ‘Chunky’ DeGale aims to fight more often in 2012. He kicks off his fighting year by travelling to Denmark to face the vastly experienced ex world champion Cristian Sanavia. This will be DeGale’s first defence of his EBU Super Middleweight title. He won the belt by outpointing Piotr Wilczewski to a majority decision in a tough fight last October.

Both DeGale and Sanavia are at different stages in their respective careers; let’s take a look at their head to head stats.

James Degale                            Cristian Sanavia
Age                                26                                                 37
Height                            6ft ½                                            5ft7 ½
Record                           11-1 (8 KO)                                  45-5 (13 KO)
Last five                        WWWLW                                       WWWWW
Best wins                       Piotr Wilczewski                            Markus Beyer
                                       Paul Smith                                    Morrade Hakkar

As you can see from looking at the head to head stats, Degale has some good advantages. He has youth (11 years younger), Height (5 inches taller) and knockout ratio (70 % to Sanavia's 25%). Sanavia has the better win; he beat Markus Beyer for the WBC super-middleweight title. One more advantage Sanavia has is experience. He has had 38 more fights than DeGale and he plans on using his experience to his advantage. He told ESPN
“DeGale had a great amateur career but he has never been inside the ring with somebody as experienced as me."
It’s a good fight for Degale and one he should win. Expect the on-going DeGale/Groves rematch talk to continue after this bout. What do you think? Good or bad fight for DeGale? Let me know.
