A preview of the best boxing action this weekend, Antonio Tarver vs Lateef Kayode

They came in at number seven and number nine in our top-ten cruiserweight list, and now Antonio Tarver and Lateef Kayode are fighting for the IBO Cruiserweight title. They meet this Saturday at the Home Depot Centre, Carson, California.

Tarver has spent the best part of half a year calling people out on Twitter, offering fights to everyone from Wladimir Klitschko to Floyd Mayweather. This kind of loud-mouth posturing does work sometimes, and plenty of people land world title fights that way. It hasn't gotten Tarver a shot at a belt in this case, but Lateef is a promising, unbeaten prospect and a win against him would shoot Tarver up the rankings.

Tarver has been inactive of late, fighting just five times between 2007 - 2010, and amassing a 3-2 record, his two losses coming against Chad Dawson at light heavyweight. Mid 2011 he told us he was back, and he followed this announcement by beating Danny Green in July.

Kayode has been getting hyped up by cruiserweight fans the last few years, and his eighteen win record, fourteen by knockout, does sound impressive. The problem with Lateef is that as he has stepped up his level of opposition, the more he has struggled. And I don't mean the normal struggles that you would expect with increasing competition, I mean he has looked shaky.

This is an intriguing match because a win for either men will do their career the world of good, although perhaps Kayode needs it more than Tarver. That's a pity though, because I back Tarver to beat Kayode in this one. I think the ex-IBF champion will be too much for Kayode and he will get the twenty-first knockout of his career.
